In regards to finding a good caterer a few things come into mind before:
1. type of food you will be serving
2. buffet/sit down
Wedding planners like myself have great relationships with a number of caterers so we are always available to provide you with the right people for your need. However, if you are searching on your own, you will need to call the caterer, ask their prices, references, and go and do a taste test for yourself. So you know what type of food will be served and there will be no surprises.
