Vera Wang is not only one of the top designers for bridal couture, but whose name inspires brides-to-be with wide-eyed wonder. Her style is classic and elegant, with a delicate use of lace, which has made her one of the top bridal designers for those in search of a wedding dress to remember.
This designer who is synonymous with romance has an eclectic collection of bridal wear ranging through varying styles, shapes and colors.
Six months ago, Vera Wang’s bridal collection was rich in brilliant shades of red, spanning scarlet to vermillion. The year before that, everything was black. Vera Wang is always reinventing bridal couture to keep things fresh and other designers on their toes. This year, she returns with traditional romanticism, flowing with princess skirts, delicate lace and virginal white.
The new collection is described as “as study in femininity and romance that celebrates the wedding gown in a new take on classicism and ornamentation.”
Born to Chinese immigrants from Shanghai, who came to the US in the 40s, Vera Wang has been a New Yorker since birth. She’s had a varied career not limited to her work as a designer; in fact she used to be a figure skater. She had taken up skating since six, but when she failed to make the US Olympics team in 1968, she gave up her athletic career and turned to fashion.
She became the senior fashion editor for Vogue in 1970, but let after losing out the editor-in-chief position, she went to work Ralph Lauren as a design director before branching out into her own line.
What has unmistakably put Wang on the map of fashion are her wedding gowns. She’s had an impressive line of celebrity clientele from Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, Sharon Stone, Uma Thurman, Kim Kardashian, Ivanka Trump, Mariah Carey and more.
Twenty years after the opening of her very first bridal boutique, she was awarded the Leadership in the Arts Awards by Harvard-Radcliffe Asian American Association.
Vera Wang’s styles might change with the flow, from black to red bridal dresses, through to classic and feminine bridal couture, with corsets, large princess skirts, lace and tulle and more. But nothing makes a bride feel more like personalized romance and elegance than a Vera Wang wedding dress. It’s easy to see why so many brides go back to Vera Wang for their special day, year after year, and why she’s loved by so many.
